Evaluating eDNA for Use within Marine Environmental Impact Assessments

چکیده

In this review, the use of environmental DNA (eDNA) within Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) is evaluated. EIA documents provide information required by regulators to evaluate potential impact a development project. Currently eDNA being incorporated into biodiversity assessments as complementary method for detecting rare, endangered or invasive species. However, questions have been raised regarding maturity field and suitability evidence EIA. Several key issues are identified generic framework marine environments. First, it challenging define sampling unit optimal strategy with respect project area receptor. Second, assay validation protocols preliminary at time. Third, there statistical around probability obtaining both false positives (identification taxa that not present) negatives (non-detection in results. At minimum, an must quantify uncertainty presence/absence estimates combining series Bernoulli trials ad hoc occupancy models. Finally, fate transport fragments largely unknown systems. Nonetheless, more actors enter field, technological solutions likely emerge these issues. already shows great promise baseline descriptions presence species surrounding can aid identification receptors monitoring using other methods.

Investigating the Potential Use of Environmental DNA (eDNA) for Genetic Monitoring of Marine Mammals

The exploitation of non-invasive samples has been widely used in genetic monitoring of terrestrial species. In aquatic ecosystems, non-invasive samples such as feces, shed hair or skin, are less accessible. However, the use of environmental DNA (eDNA) has recently been shown to be an effective tool for genetic monitoring of species presence in freshwater ecosystems. Detecting species in the mar...

Use of animal species data in environmental impact assessments.

Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs) should ideally help minimize adverse effects on biological diversity by considering impacts of projects on wide ranges of species. This paper investigates how recent Dutch EIAs included the species comprising animal diversity. We present results of two studies on fauna data used in the EIAs. Objectives were to determine for different taxa (a) the relative...

Evaluating the Influence of Global Environmental Assessments

Introduction Global environmental changes and scientific assessments of those changes have become increasingly common elements in international, national, and even local policymaking and decision making. Do assessments of the causes of, impacts of, and options for dealing with global environmental problems influence how society addresses those prob-lems? How do those assessments influence polic...

Health Impact Assessment Practice and Potential for Integration within Environmental Impact and Strategic Environmental Assessments in Italy

Avoiding or minimizing potential environmental impact is the driving idea behind protecting a population's health via Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs) and Strategic Environmental Assessments (SEAs). However, both are often carried out without any systematic approach. This paper describes the findings of a review of HIA, EIA andSEA experiences carried out by the authors, who act as instit...

Identifying the Relevant Local Population for Environmental Impact Assessments of Mobile Marine Fauna

Environmental impact assessments must be addressed at a scale that reflects the biological organization for the species affected. It can be challenging to identify the relevant local wildlife population for impact assessment for those species that are continuously distributed and highly mobile. Here, we document the existence of local communities of Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops ad...
